I love Scrivener, have been using it for years to organise my notes for non-fiction books. Then I write the book in Atticus…
But I switched from Mac to PC and didn’t feel like paying again for Scrivener. And I had just discovered Obsidian which is free and good enough for my needs – storing notes, pics and files in a nested structure that becomes my book.
There is no direct way to export from Scrivener and import into Obsidian, as in it takes a couple of clicks. But there is a way, a long-winded way, to switch over with everything intact.
Export Scrivener as a Files > .docx
That will give you, when unzipped, the entire project, with the structure intact, in a folder.
Import as docx into Obsidian
This is a bit of a chore!
For each folder in the exported data, I create one in Obsidian (use the button at the top, and type in the name). I then import the .docx files from just that folder into Obsidian (there is a button for it on the left), then I drag and drop them into the folder I created, and then I drag and drop that into a master folder. That stops things getting too confusing.
If you have nested folders in Scrivener, then that is just an extra layer of work.
The result – everything should be the same, and you can continue your work. Make sure you backup as a Scrivener file as well and keep that in case you want to install Scrivener again on the new device.
