Skelton Kiwifruit

My Dad had two obsessions in life – breeding a champion racehorse (essentially he wanted a Melbourne Cup winner) and creating the best kiwifruit.

Both covered many decades. With the kiwis, that meant endless experimentation – more than anyone.

Over nearly 40 years Don cross bred over 40 different varieties and is regarded as one of the preeminent kiwifruit breeders. Being deliberately independent from the NZ government controlled and funded Zespri Don has bred more kiwifruit varieties than any other New Zealander.

…who has developed 40% of all Kiwifruit Plant Variety Rights (PVRs) worldwide. Don’s varieties are popularly known by their prestigious brand names, such as KiwiKiss, First Gold, Tropikiwi and Enza gold.

Competing with the government’s Zespri and their facilities and funding wasn’t easy. Dad literally had a 2m x 2m shed he worked out of, and a small farm. No outside funding.

He achieved many of his goals. The highest yielding kiwifruit (small fruit, only good for processing). The earliest gold kiwi (which means first to market fresh) that also won taste tests. The fruit with the least spurs (leads to damaged fruit). The largest. And so on.

His fruit have not dominated, but they still have many fans in dozens of countries, growing and selling them. Makes me proud.

For example Sunveld in South Africa are producing hundreds of tonnes.

And here is Kate, who came 5th in the G2 Wakeful, and injured in the G1 Oaks but still came 12th, and mother of Complicate who has won 6 races. If she has babies it will be the 7th generation (and the first not bred by Dad) since Marwini, named after my grandmother Margaret Winifred Skelton

“My filly was Marwini (by Sharivari ). She won four races and she won on the right days – when she won the Centennial Cup at Paeroa she paid $38. She had a broken pelvis so had a limited career but she went on to have nine foals, including two winners. Avistar (Conquistarose [USA]) was trained by Tony Cole and was group three placed for him before he sold her.

“I kept one daughter Kaua’I and raced her and bred from her. Her first foal was Dutowin, I nearly sold her. I actually had to buy her back as she had gone past her reserve at auction and then I thought bugger it, I haven’t got any fillies left out of this family, I better keep her so I had to buy her back.
