Australia has some illustrious entries in the catalog of mad micronations – man monks with delusions of grandeur setting up their own kingdom. Often for laughs, sometimes due to tax issues. They are the original “sovereign citizens”. And all fail in some way.
So, the plan is to set it up in such a way that there are zero legal issues, and be so successful (or difficult) eventually that you get given enough concessions to be considered a win. No passports, no diplomats, no taxes… just odd and left to be.
The moat: it crossed my mind that a bunch of farmers on a dead end road could just dig a moat somewhere across that road as a demarcation. Something like, no powered vehicles shall enter here. The state will figure we are just making things worse for ourselves, and won’t be bothered to fix it, at least not twice.
A line in the sand.
Rebellion wins when the resources to fight it are not worth it. Think graffiti.
That’s the start. Then we do the whole commune and bartering thing, all legal. We still pay taxes. But we have some civil disobedience. For example not voting, or avoiding the census, and paying the fines instead.
We become a destination, a Cause célèbre. Famous. Think counterculture parties, stick it to the man.
Eventually we prove that mini, independent communes can be viable and outside of the state system. We will provoke change. And then we ask to stop paying rates and land tax, because we get zero benefit from it.
