TV Idea: Second Chance

An isolated property on the edge of a desert (so, Australia or maybe USA), is trying to turn the desert into productive land. It is possible, but not commercially viable, so it is funded by a reclusive weirdo who inherited the land and staffed by virtuous volunteers.

Because it is labour intensive they let “anyone” help out in exchange for food and lodging. It becomes well-known as the “second chance” place that takes in waifs and strays.

Of course it attracts people who are hiding from the law or the mob.

For the most part the show is about bonding, charity, rehabilitation and psychology.

But some “bad” people choose to stay there, and they are difficult, threatening the idealism. They also attract the cops and mob.

The ranch is so isolated that nobody can arrive unannounced. When the Feds turn up, bad guys have already achieved a pre-planned escape route.

Same applies to drugs – so isolated, anything can go.

Lawlessness becomes a problem.
Teen fugitives turn up.
Personal drug production goes commercial
They choose to go off-grid, literally, at the end of season one, disconnected from the rest of the world in every way
